NJ NEWS -- A Brazilian exchange student, Carla Vicentini, was hanging in a local bar and grill with friends in Newark, New Jersey, in the early hours of February 10, 2006. At the time, she was believed to have been intoxicated, when she was invited outside the establishment by an unidentified white male. Carla told a friend that she was going outside the bar to the man's car to view a photograph, but never returned.

Carla Vicentini has been missing since that date, and is considered by the FBI to have been kidnapped.

Furthermore, Carla Vicentini had been living with another exchange student in Newark at the time of her kidnapping, and had only arrived in the United States on January 19, 2006, from Brazil.

Although mere speculation, the possibility does exist that Carla Vicentini was coerced into sex trafficking or involuntary servitude. I reiterate, this is mere speculation, but human trafficking does exist in the United States. In 2004, the U.S. Department of Justice estimated 14,500 to 17,500 foreign nationals are trafficked into the United States annually, 70% of these trafficked humans are young women and children, who are especially vulnerable to exploitation. Moreover, the number of U.S. citizens domestically trafficked within the country annually is higher, with an estimated 200,000 American children at risk for exploitation in the sex trafficking industry.

Meanwhile, with recent arrests resulting from Operation Cross Country II, more attention is being given to this heinous criminal activity. The three-day joint law enforcement action, Operation Cross Country II, joined more than 92 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in 29 U.S. cities, leading to 642 arrests and the rescue of 47 children from victimization. Many of these children were teenage girls being pimped in prostitution. What is more, since 2003, more than 575 child victims have been recovered due to the efforts of these joint agencies' collaborations.

Obviously, when including the statical data available on human trafficking within the U.S., it becomes reasonable that Carla Vicentini could be found alive, but first there must be a conscious effort to find this young woman.
